The climate Calabria and the climate
Following the extremely harsh summer in which the earth is scorched,
the first autumn rains bring forth a gush of green vegetation and
flowers and as the housemartins leave Ciro' for Africa the finches
and blackbirds arrive from the north.
The Calabrian climate is decidedly Mediterranean. The Ionian
coast is warmer and dryer than the Tyrrenean coast, infact it is
the hottest area on the peninsula. Heading inland towards the Sila
mountains one finds various microclimates that prompt a wild diversity
of vegetation.
The seasons
Winter in the area of Ciro' hardly exists. Though the cold north
'Tramontana' winds occasionally blow for 3 or 12 days, when the
sun's out it feels like spring. The summers months are long and
hot and it is common to have only one or two rains storms between
May and September.
