Pruning

Pruning begins in the winter, following the graft. The most common little trees in the Ciro' d.o.c. area are those with three or four branches stemming from the stump and it is the pruning that determines this shape.

The young vine in the first years is guided to a height sufficient enough not to allow the grapes to touch the soil. The second year following the graft, the vine will already produce a limited amount of grapes, and from the third year enough will be produced to call a harvest. The mature vine is pruned in a way that leaves two or three gems on each spur.

Potatura verde
The alberello is held up by a cane and as it enters its vegetative stage in spring, the branches are laced along wires forming an arch. In May and June any surplus buds that have developed are removed. In the summer leaves are removed around the grapes to allow more light to reach the fruit and help it to full maturity
