d.o.c. territory The territory Dictated by a dramatic and omnipotent land structure, Calabria
is as immense as it is tiny. The irregularity of the landscape makes
orientation quite difficult. The roads going inland stop and start,
twist and turn as they make there way to Melissa, Crucoli and Ciro'.
Each of these hill villages lives as an island, they look over the
valleys to each other. Geology The d.o.c. area
Calabria consists of 780 km of coast line. 44% of the territory
is above 500m and only 9% plains.
Looking inland from Ciro' the villages of San Nicola and Carfizzi
can be seen. The inhabitants of these villages speak in Arberesh,
the language they brought with them from Albania when they arrived
here in the 1300's.
From a geological point of view the coast is characterised
by erosions and landslides, in which philladic schists prevail.
The earth in the valley and plains is composed largely of marl
and clay, however there are also many sandy stetches too.

Approximately 1/3 of Ciro' D.O.C vineyards can be found on the narrow
coastal plains of Punta Alice and Feudo situated between Ciro' Marina
and Torre Melissa. The rest of the vines can be found in the valleys
below the village settlements, and along the sides of the rivers
Lipuda and Nica'
