The fiumare
The fiumare are the immense river beds that wind their way down to the Ionian sea from the Sila Mountains. When Calabria was encountered by the Greeks 2500 years ago, they found dense forests and the fiumare, which, in that epoch, proved navigable. The Fiumare offered the only access inland towards the Sila.

The rivers Fiume nica', Lipuda that cut through the hills from the forest in the Sila Greca have forged the valleys on which many vinekeepers have chosen to plant their vines.

The transumanza
The fiumare have in this millennium served as the most efficient route for the cattle herdsmen to make the journey from the coast to the mountains in search of fertile grounds.

The first part of the fiumare about 10 km inland takes the appearance of a narrow gorge surrounded by thick woods, soon it opens out into an immense rocky bed that in winter, when the rains arrive, cuts its way through the any vegetation, and drags the debris and mud with force down to the Ionian coast.
