Greco Bianco
Greco Bianco... is believed to be the grape variety that has existed on the Ionian coast since the Magna Grecia, during which time it was referred to as "aminea" - without red. A will inscribed on marble dating back to the Roman period was unearthed in Petelia (now Strongoli, 20km away from Ciro') in which an Aminea (without red) vine was bequeathed to a member of the village.

The Greco Bianco is generally cultivated in the form of Alberello. It is a hardy and resistant vine of abundant and consistent production. It rarely suffers from molds, moths or adverse climatic conditions. The Greco Bianco, akin to the Gaglioppo, has an elevated sugar content with medium to high acidity.

Description
The bunch is of average size, cylindrical, short, with one or two wings. The grape is spherical or oval and of medium size. The skin has very little waxy covering (bloom) and in full maturation it becomes a golden yellow colour. Its pulp is juicy and its taste is sweet and simple.

What the D.O.C regulations have to say:

• White Ciro' DOC must be developed from grapes derived from vineyards composed of Greco Bianco vines.
• The production of white Ciro' DOC also permits the incorporation of grapes derived from Trebbiano Toscano vines, but the amount of this variety must not exceed 10% of all the grapes in an entire vineyard.
